MINI FESTIVAL OF CHILDREN’S DRAWINGS
5.06-8.06.2018

We invite organised groups of school students with carers for a few days of intense drawing in the Arsenał Municipal Gallery! Between June 5-8, 9am – 2pm, we will hold a variety of drawing workshops led by outstanding instructors. We will approach drawing very creatively, preparing the ground in a host of different ways, looking at different techniques and entering with out drawings the institution’s space. The children’s works made during the workshops will make up a temporary joint installation of an exhibition.

Program:

5.06 (Tuesday) Large Drawing Format, moderator: Tomek Mazur

9:00-10:15 – I group

10:30-11:45 – II group

Have you had the chance to draw large drawings? If not, our workshop will offer you a chance to draw a fragment of a huge joint work. While the ultimate effect cannot be planned, yet we can assure you that the result of the joint work is bound to surprise all whose single drawings will make up the final whole. Our work will be inspired by Henri Matisse’s works, especially his cut-outs. We will make our colourful drawing on gallery premises with the aid of stencils made on the basis of the artist’s paintings.

12:00 – 13:30 Erased Work – Negative and Positive, moderator: Filip Brzyski

Is a negative invariably bad? Is a positive a good thing? Perhaps not always. A line after a line, a patch after a patch, and the work comes to an end. What if we were to reverse the process of making the works. We can paint over the entire surface and then erase the necessary fragments, which will come up with something ... positive. We could feel as if in a negative in the process.

6.06 (Wednesday) Drawing in Space, moderator: Tomek Mazur

9:00-10:15 – I group

10:30-11:45 – II group

If you want to make sure that it pays off to transfer your ideas beyond the flat surface of a sheet of paper, you must come to our workshop. We will show you that one can draw in space. We will compose a 3D puzzle of white cartons and then will fill them with drawings. We will be inspired by the simple and linear drawings by Picasso. At the end, we will discuss the work thus created. We will identify the changes in the content of the drawing once we change the arrangement of the cartons filled with drawings.

12:00 – 13:30 An Ear Out of Place, moderator: Filip Brzyski

Have you ever wondered if our ears could be placed in another location on our bodies? How would it look like? Our faces are, contrary to what you may think, in perfect order. During the workshop we will get to know specific rules and then mix them up a little bit. We will have a glance at Pablo Picasso’s art and compose a puzzle inspired by Cubism in art.

7.06 (Thursday) Kinetic Portrait of Świerszczydło, moderator: Ewa Bone, Ewa Kozubal

9:00-10:15 – I group

10:30-11:45 – II group

We will use lines and patches to portray the eponymous Świerszczydło. The workshop will be based on kinetic art and Miro’s works. The line will build the form. A moveable, suspended construction. Pasted on the skeleton will be flat colour elements, vibrating when touched. Line, colour and the shape of the patch will create a living creature. The spatial installation will be composed of wires, sticks, coloured paper, threads, and balls. We will cut out individual parts of the creature of coloured papers and glue them to the wire skeleton prepared earlier.

12:00-13:30 Extra-ordinary Journeys of the Line, moderator: Natalia Czarcińska

Where can we find lines in nature? Are there many of them? Where can the lines lead us? Is a trace of a plane in the sky, long pasta, traces in the sand, or power lines be called drawings? Can the line, as Paul Klee observed, be taken for a walk? These are only some of the questions, simple and zigzagging, smooth and uneven, that we will address during the June workshop. Later on we will draw everything with the aid of extra-ordinary tools.

8.06 (Friday) Cubist Portrait of Świerszczydło, moderators: Ewa Bone, Ewa Kozubal

9:00-10:15 – I group

10:30-11:45 – II group

The portrait of the eponymous Świerszczydło will be made with the aid of shape, colour, structure, and line. Pasted on a prepared spatial and colourful model of carton will be eyes, ears, tails, etc. The actions will be based on shapes and will attempt to create a spatial form. Through the deconstructing of individual elements, we will create a new form that will be linked to Cubism. Added to the object we will prepare will be spatial, colourful elements of the creature’s body and a 3D drawing will be obtained.

12:00-13:30 Small Drawing Machines, moderator: Natalia Czarcińska

Who said that you can only draw with a crayon or a pencil? With the use of simple materials like elastic rubbers, scotch tape, strings, sticks, etc., we will construct simple tools, or drawing machines, which will let us make exceptional, if a bit haphazard drawings.
